What is adenomyosis?

How adenomyosis forms

Adenomyosis occurs when the lining of the womb grows into the muscle wall of the uterus.

What are the symptoms?

The following symptoms are associated with adenomyosis:

  • Painful periods
  • Heavy periods
  • Pelvic pain / Back pain / Bloating
  • Painful intercourse

How is adenomyosis diagnosed?

Pelvic ultrasound and MRI have been found to be 72-89% accurate in the prediction of adenomyosis, but the only way to confirm the diagnosis is after hysterectomy, when the pathologist examines the muscle tissue of the uterus.

What are the treatments for adenomyosis?

Dr. Reid will explain the treatment options during your appointment. There are medical, surgical and radiological treatments available for the management of adenomyosis.

Adenomyosis AT PELVIC ULTRASOUND

Features of adenomyosis can be visualised during a pelvic ultrasound examination.

This video demonstrates an enlarged uterus with "fan-shaped" shadowing throughout the uterine tissue, which is an ultrasound feature associated with adenomyosis.
