Adenomyosis occurs when the lining of the womb grows into the muscle wall of the uterus.

Pelvic ultrasound and MRI have been found to be 72-89% accurate in the prediction of adenomyosis, but the only way to confirm the diagnosis is after hysterectomy, when the pathologist examines the muscle tissue of the uterus.
